The records were falling one after another at the Welland International Flatwater Centre this week as some of Canada’s top paddlers took to the water for the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

The family that bikes together, stays together. Cycling has been a family-friendly event at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games for two households in particular. Charles-Antoine St-Onge, younger brother Maxime St-Onge and sister Marie-Fay St-Onge have turned in solid performances for Team Quebec while sisters Ava and Isabella Holmgren of Orillia have done Team Ontario proud.

Record-breaking performances are a distinct possibility during the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. But one mark that no one will come close to is the record held by 16-year-old Olivier Rioux. The 16-year-old basketball player from Terrebonne, Que., has been named by Guinness World Records as the tallest teenager in the world.

Talia Grant and Shawna Kyak have become the early media darlings of the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. The Nunavut beach volleyball players are in constant demand from the press as the first competitors from the territory competing in that sport at the Games.

For the second day in a row, female sporting history was made at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games. Newfoundland and Labrador’s Jaida Lee became the first female to pitch in the men’s baseball competition at the Games on Monday at Welland Stadium. On Sunday, women’s box lacrosse was played for the first time at the Games.

Some of Canada’s top young women rugby players took to the pitch this week as rugby sevens made its debut at the Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games.

Macey Hatfield made history Sunday morning at Canada Games Park. In a 8-1 New Brunswick victory over Prince Edward Island, the 16-year-old Saint John native scored the first women’s box lacrosse goal in Canada Games history. The Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games marks the first time the sport has been contested at the Games.

Shamar Bennett was texting photos to his mother from the floor of the opening ceremonies on Saturday, with no idea that she was looking right at him and recording the whole thing.
