THE LATE DON GOODWIN WAS FIRST AND FOREMOST A BROADCASTER, BUT HE ALSO HAD A DEEP AND ABIDING PASSION FOR SPORT AND RECREATION DUE TO ITS IMPORTANCE AND VALUE FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY.
By combining his role as a broadcaster, his role as a volunteer leader in Canadian amateur sport, and his prominence as a public figure in Halifax, Don became the catalyst that led to the tremendous success of the 1969 Canada Summer Games and persuaded the CBC to broadcast the 1969 Games on both television and radio, in both official languages, providing the Games with nation-wide exposure.
Much of Don’s enthusiasm for multi- sport games came from his experience as a CBC commentator for the Olympic, Commonwealth, and Pan Am Games throughout the 1960s.
Don’s outstanding communication and organizational skills led to volunteer service at the highest levels, including as president of the Canadian Amateur Sports Federation and the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada and as a director and vice president with the Canadian Olympic Association.
Through his involvement as a broadcaster and volunteer, Don received numerous awards and recognitions from national sports associations, the provincial government, and other sports associations.
