Canada Games Council Unveils Initial Sport Program for 2027 Canada Winter Games

Ottawa – The Canada Games Council (CGC) is pleased to announce the initial sports and disciplines selected for the 2027 Canada Winter Games in Yukon.

The CGC Sport & Games Committee adhered to a transparent and objective sport selection process in which it analyzed all sports and disciplines that wished to be included in the 2027 Canada Winter Games. The total number of sports/disciplines selected for the Games are based on a participant quota that each Games must follow.

Phase 1 of the sport selection process included an assessment evaluating the impact of a sport/discipline on the development of the next generation of Canadian national team athletes, on sport development at the local, provincial/territorial and national levels, and on the Canada Games movement.

Phase 1 determined the initial 90% of the sport program for the 2027 Canada Winter Games. The sports selected are as follows:

  • -Alpine Skiing & Para Alpine Skiing
  • -Archery
  • -Artistic Gymnastics
  • -Badminton
  • -Biathlon
  • -Cross Country Skiing & Para Nordic Skiing
  • -Curling (Four Person Team, Mixed Doubles)
  • -Figure Skating & Special Olympics Figure Skating
  • -Hockey
  • -Judo
  • -Karate
  • -Ringette
  • -Snowboarding
  • -Speed Skating - Long Track
  • -Speed Skating - Short Track
  • -Squash
  • -Table Tennis
  • -Trampoline
  • -Wheelchair Basketball

The sport selection process will continue with two additional phases to determine the final 10% of the 2027 sport program. Phase 2 will be the Host Choice sport(s) selected by the 2027 Bid Committee in late 2022. Phase 3 will unfold no later than the winter of 2024, with the final selections to be determined based on the remaining participant quota by the CGC Sport & Games Committee in consultation with the 2027 Canada Winter Games Host Society.

Please direct any questions regarding the sport selection process to Kali MacAdam, Advisor, Sport & Games with the Canada Games Council.
